Families coming from the UK, Kenya, Uganda, South Africa or the Gulf often look for British curriculum schools in Kigali. In Kigali, the British option almost always means the Cambridge International pathway: Cambridge Primary, Lower Secondary, IGCSE and, at some schools, AS and A Levels. This page explains how that pathway works, which schools offer it according to public sources, and how we help families choose and apply.
We do not rank schools. We give sourced facts, help you compare them, and leave the decision with you.
The Cambridge pathway explained
Cambridge International organises its programmes in five stages. A school can offer the full pathway or only some stages.
| Stage | Starting age | Main qualifications |
|---|---|---|
| Cambridge Early Years | 3+ | None (early learning framework) |
| Cambridge Primary | 5+ | School-based assessment |
| Cambridge Lower Secondary | 11+ | School-based assessment |
| Cambridge Upper Secondary | 14+ | Cambridge IGCSE or O Level |
| Cambridge Advanced | 16+ | Cambridge International AS and A Levels |
The big decision points are at 14, when students choose IGCSE subjects, and at 16, when they choose A Level subjects. A Levels let students specialise in three or four subjects, which suits students who already know the field they want to study.

Cambridge schools in Kigali
The following schools describe Cambridge programmes in their public profiles on doris.school. The list is in alphabetical order and is not complete.
- Acorns International School Kigali: learners from birth to 18 on a Cambridge continuum: Early Years, Cambridge Primary, Lower Secondary, IGCSE, and Cambridge International AS and A Levels.
- Bright Angels International School (BAIS): a bilingual English and French school in Nyarutarama, from daycare through lower secondary, following Cambridge Primary and Lower Secondary.
- Wellspring Academy Kigali: Cambridge International education for ages 3 to 18, including Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels.
Other private schools in Kigali combine Rwanda's national curriculum with Cambridge courses or exams. If you are flexible on curriculum, these widen your choice, especially for younger children.
Because programmes change, ask each school which stages it currently runs, which IGCSE and A Level subjects are available this year, and whether it is a registered Cambridge exam centre.
Fees and extras
We could not find published 2026/27 fee schedules for the Cambridge schools listed above when we checked in October 2026, so contact us for a current quote. When you compare, remember to add:
- application and registration fees;
- one-time enrolment or development fees;
- IGCSE and A Level exam entry fees, which are often billed separately in exam years;
- lunch, transport, uniforms and trips.
For comparison, Kigali schools that do publish fees range from about RWF 3.8 million a year at Green Hills Academy to USD 26,435 a year in high school at the International School of Kigali (2026/27). Our school fees guide explains the full picture.
Is a Cambridge school the right choice?
Cambridge schools are a natural fit if:
- your child already follows the English National Curriculum or a Cambridge programme;
- you may return to the UK or move to another country where IGCSE and A Levels are common;
- your teenager wants to specialise early in a few A Level subjects.
Consider other options if:
- you move every two or three years between countries where the IB is more common: see IB schools in Kigali;
- your child is aiming for North American universities and you prefer AP courses: see American curriculum schools;
- your child's main language of schooling is French: see French schools in Kigali.
Moving between systems: year groups
Year names differ between systems, which causes confusion at application time. An English "Year", a Cambridge stage, an American "Grade" and a French class name can describe children of different ages, and each school uses its own age cut-off date. The International School of Kigali, for example, places children by their age on 1 September, while the French school uses age by 31 December.
Schools decide placement themselves, often by date of birth plus an assessment. Send reports early, include your child's date of birth on every form, and ask each school which year group it would offer before you compare fees.
Questions to ask a Cambridge school
- Which Cambridge stages do you offer, and are you a registered Cambridge exam centre?
- Which IGCSE and A Level subjects are running next year, and is there a minimum class size?
- How do you support students joining in Year 10 or Year 12, midway through a course?
- Are exam entry fees included in tuition or billed separately?

Frequently asked questions
Is there a British school in Kigali?
Several schools in Kigali follow the British style Cambridge International pathway rather than the English National Curriculum itself. Examples include Acorns International School, Bright Angels International School and Wellspring Academy, according to their doris.school profiles. Each offers different stages, so check the age range.
What is the Cambridge pathway?
Cambridge International organises its programmes in five stages: Cambridge Early Years from age 3, Primary from age 5, Lower Secondary from age 11, Upper Secondary from age 14 with IGCSE and O Level, and Advanced from age 16 with AS and A Levels. Schools may offer only some stages.
Which Kigali schools offer A Levels?
According to their doris.school profiles, Acorns International School Kigali offers Cambridge International AS and A Levels, and Wellspring Academy Kigali teaches Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels for ages 3 to 18. Confirm which subjects run each year, because options can depend on student numbers.
Can my child move from the English National Curriculum to a Cambridge school?
Usually the move is smooth, because both are British style systems with similar subjects and exam routes. Year names and placement can differ, so send recent reports and ask how the school places children by age and prior learning.
How much do Cambridge schools in Kigali cost?
We could not find published 2026/27 fee schedules for the Cambridge schools named on this page when we checked in October 2026. Contact us for a current quote and we will gather fees, one-off charges and extras for the schools on your shortlist.
Are IGCSE and A Levels recognised for university?
Cambridge IGCSE and A Levels are widely used for university entry, especially in the UK and Commonwealth countries. Each university sets its own grade requirements and subject prerequisites, so check the universities your child is considering before choosing A Level subjects.
